There have been many controversial covers over the years and I'm sure there will be many more to come. If we're talking mass murderers, here are just a few examples:
How many times did we see Tsarnaev's mug on the news during and after the Boston marathon bombing? How many other magazines and newspapers featured his face and story on the cover or front page? If TIME did a piece on this guy and put him on the cover, it would probably get rave reviews. People are screaming about him getting attention when he shouldn't but little do they realise they are the ones fuelling the media fire.
Another common thread amongst the masses? "Rolling Stone is a Rock & Roll magazine and they have no right reporting on such things". Huh?!? RS has been political from the get-go. It's what separates them from Spin, NME, Vibe, Mojo, Q and Guitar Player. While I may not agree with everything they have to say, they say it well and with conviction.
Last and most definitely not least, various stores are going to pull this issue from their shelves. Are you fucking kidding me? http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/18/business/media/cvs-and-walgreens-ban-an-issue-of-rolling-stone.html?_r=0 Now Walgreens is deciding what people get to read? They must be in bed with the FCC, et al. Yet another store to add to my boycott list. Fuck, this list is getting really long.
Get over it PCers, Rolling Stone doesn't do watered down, politically sensible articles to appeal to the morons out there. If that's what you are looking for, read TIME, Oprah or National Geographic or just watch your local news station. I'M going out to buy multiple copies of this particular issue to give to friends.
