Today I celebrate my best friend. While he may not see his birthday as important, I certainly do. It celebrates the day the world welcomed him and without that day, there would be no him and therefore no us.

Our interests are varied and our lives are worlds apart but somehow we always manage to come together and celebrate our connection. It could be through coffee, dinner or shopping but mostly it's through music. He has opened my eyes to new music as I have opened his. We roadtrip to the sounds of 50 Cent, Band of Horses and Napalm Death. We've seen countless concerts together and travelled many miles to see them. I've never met somebody who lives and breathes music the same way I do. We do it in very different ways but at the end of the day, I'm sure music is what keeps us both alive. 

He forces me to open my eyes even when I want to keep them tightly closed. He chastises me when I'm being ridiculous. He tells me when I'm wrong and congratulates me when I'm right. He tells me when I look pretty but says nothing when I don't. He's even convinced me that I really am worthy of good things. He watches out for me like a brother, reasons with me like a father and tells me the truth like a friend.

Some people call him my other boyfriend, others think we're friends with benefits. I call him my best friend. We are one another's confidantes, listening but never passing judgement. We support each other's decisions and cheer when the decision is good and offer a shoulder when it's not so good. Our friendship is based on respect, trust and love.  As one can read, there are many benefits to our friendship, none of which are sexual in nature.

So I raise the proverbial glass and toast a great man, a wonderful friend and a long lasting friendship. I wish only the best for you on your birthday and every other day for as long as your body and mind will allow.
