As I was vacuuming feathers off my carpet today, I realised that I have been to a few theme parties over the last year and rarely have to purchase new clothes or accessories. Twenties, eighties, sixties, fifties... I own feather boas, evening gloves, hats, head pieces, dresses, stockings, crinolines and enough jewelry, costume or otherwise, to outfit ten ladies in any era. One has to wonder about this. Where do these things come from? What possesses me to purchase such items? I can honestly say I do not buy them with the intent of wearing them for costumes. Hmmmm...
What is my favourite era you ask? Well... I definitely prefer the late fifties early sixties time period. There was an air of innocence about the hair, make-up and clothing. The perfectly quaffed 'dos, nipped waists and ivory skin. I find these styles easy to pull off as I have the hourglass type figure, pale complexion and big hair. The music was great as well... The girl groups (Chiffons, Shangri-las, Crystals, Ronettes, Lesley Gore), motown (Four Tops, Temptations, Smoky Robinson and the Miracles, Stevie Wonder) and of course, the surf music (Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, The Marketts and The Surfaris). Feel good music, through and through.
If you have watched television lately, you will have noticed the bevy of period shows being aired. We have the roaring twenties in Boardwalk Empire. My favourite era is represented in Mad Men and Pan Am. We even have Medieval Times in Game of Thrones! These shows are so much better than most of the other modern age drivel on the telly. They are historically accurate and fun to watch. A history lesson as well as entertainment. Who could ask for more?
Alright back to the new year... it is upon us and instead of making resolutions, read more! Real books, not the internet. Wikipedia is not reading people. Go to the library, the book store or online and get some literature. Expand your horizons, educate yourselves. Do what you want, when you want. Take risks! Be selfish, you deserve it. (not all of the time though) Most of all, love yourself. If nobody else does as least you can take comfort in knowing you do and deep down, that is what matters the most.
It's the new year... No resolutions, no wishes, no regrets. Enjoy!
I was sooooooooooo lucky to have grown up during the 60's. Rock on!!!
