I am feeling a little nostalgic today, musically that is. NIN and The Cure are in heavy rotation and I am daydreaming of evenings spent dancing my face off at Luv-A-Fair. That ancient guy behind the bar, chainlink fencing everywhere, dancing Cyndi, Morrissey Man, dirty pool tables and of course THE MUSIC. Ministry, MC 900Ft Jesus, Depeche Mode, TKK, KMFDM, The Cure, David Bowie, Velvet Underground, Kraftwerk, Skinny Puppy, RevCo, Frontline Assembly, OMD, Modern English, The Smiths, Joy Division, D.O.A, Fugazi, SNFU, Bad Religion… the list goes on and on and on. By the end of the night, we would be starving and dehydrated and there was always the smokie cart outside. I could eat two or three of those evil bastards easily. I may also have had the munchies or something worse… The last night we were there was closing night and the line-up was around the block. There were television crews and the place was wall to wall packed with sweaty bodies, we could barely move, nevermind get to the bar for a drink. It was a bittersweet evening for me as I knew there would never be another place like it. Graceland had shut down, Richards was turning more mainstream and the Starfish Room was also gone. Where were we to go for good music and dancing in Vancouver? Precisely nowhere. I left a part of myself in the club that night, a part that I will never get back.
It is now almost a decade later, I still love the music, I still love the dancing and have discovered new places to frequent but none of them have the charm of my old haunts. The Commodore is a favourite as are Club 23, The Railway Club and The Morrissey. There are more but I wish to keep them my secret. I don’t want the Ed Hardy/Affliction wearing douchebags and their hos making them the Next.Big.Thing. Overpriced drinks and judgemental crowds are not for me. If I want to go out in a tutu, heels and an angora sweater, I’m gonna go someplace I feel comfy and at home. Fuck you orange people! Ke$ha is a talentless whore and LMFAO can dance, not sing. Overcrowded meat markets are best left to people with no taste, class or self-respect. That goes for you Roxy!(the club, not the person)
So here they are, in no particular order, my top three songs from The Cure and NIN:
The Cure
· Lullaby
Nine Inch Nails
· Piggy
· Happiness In Slavery (If you ever watched Too Much for Much with Denise Donlan, you will remember she had to turn this video off halfway through. Not for the faint of heart.)
· Sin
Oh and let’s not forget Soundproof with Dave Toddington and Tom Harrison….
That’s all my friends… time for some hairbrush dancing!

ReplyDeleteNo names, no names!!! Thank you though....
ReplyDeleteHey, how about Eric Clapton, George Thorogood, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimmy Vaughn, Charlie Musselwhite, Buddy Guy, BB King, ZZ Top, The Stones etc., etc. They'll all still be around when all those others are kicked to the curb. Other than Stevie, that is. He's gone, but not forgotten.
ReplyDeleteAll great artists, wrong era... Look up the artists I have mentioned and you may find something a little more modern to appreciate.
